CANBERRA ♥ CONDOMS ON VALENTINE’S DAY

SHFPACT DISTRIBUTES OVER 30,000 FREE CONDOMS IN CANBERRA FOR NATIONAL CONDOM DAY 2010

National Condom Day – falling on Valentine’s Day each year - is the perfect opportunity to take control of your sexual health, according to Canberra’s leading sexual & reproductive health service provider, SHFPACT (Sexual Health & Family Planning ACT), which launched the ‘I (Heart) Sex. I (Heart) Condoms” campaign this week.

“We know that people love sex, and we want them to love sex with condoms” says Tim Bavinton, Executive Director, SHFPACT. “At a time when there is much public concern about the rates of sexually transmissible infections and unplanned pregnancy in Australia, it is concerning that many sexually active people still do not use condoms with casual partners”.

Recent studies by LaTrobe University have found that only 1 in 4 Australians use condoms with casual partners every time they have sex, with many adults relying on other forms of contraception, such as hormonal implants and ‘the pill’.

“STIs (Sexually Transmissible Infections) like Chlamydia are at an all-time high in Australia. Condoms come in all shapes, colours and sizes, and are the only form of contraception to protect against both unplanned pregnancy and STIs” Mr Bavinton continued.

To celebrate National Condom Day 2010, SHFPACT has partnered with the AIDS Action Council of the ACT to promote the “I (Heart) Sex. I (Heart) Condoms.” message throughout Canberra by giving away more than 30,000 free condoms in the lead up to Valentine’s Day.

Free condoms are being made available through Safe Sex Roses (distributed by FM104.7’s Black Thunder), through “I (Heart) Sex. I (Heart) Condoms.” parties at Mooseheads, The Uni Pub and Cube Nightclub; and through numerous other youth & health venues around Canberra.

“Condoms are cheap and readily available in Canberra” said Mr Bavinton, “so don’t give your partner more than your love this Valentine’s Day.”
