Australia's premier Sexual & Reproductive Health Training for Doctors 2013

The Sexual Health & Family Planning Australia Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health for General Practitioners is a course for doctors wishing to develop their knowledge, skills and awareness in the area of sexual health. The course runs over 6 days and provides the opportunity to explore sexual and reproductive health care issues and to enhance professional practice.

To undertake the Certificate, participants must be a qualified medical practitioner registered to practice within the relevant State and a current member of a recognised medical defence organisation.

This course is recognised by the RACGP, the RACOG and Monash University. 40 Group 1 (Active Learning Module) Points have been allocated to the theory component + OSCE Exam, with a further 40 Group 1 Points for the clinical attachment. The Sexual Health & Family Planning Australia Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health (or equivalent) is one of the requirements for eligibility to work in family planning clinics around Australia.

The course is structured in three modules:

MODULE 1: Theory component (face-to-face training workshops)

MODULE 2: Assessment

MODULE 3: Clinical Attachment

The next course commences in April 2013, with dates being:

- April 11th & 12th from 9am to 5pm (Theory Units 1 & 2)
- August 10th & 11th from 9am to 5pm (Theory Units 3 & 4)
- August 24th & 25th from 9am to 5pm (Theory Units 5 & 6, Assessment)

Clinical Attachment dates and times are by negotiation with each trainee.

Curriculum Details

MODULE 1:THEORY

UNIT 1: CONTRACEPTIVE TECHNOLOGY
Overview of contraceptive methods, including hormonal contraception, IUDs, periodic abstinence and barrier methods,Vasectomy; Sterilisation.

UNIT 2: WOMEN’S HEALTH & STIs
Sexually transmitted infections; Breast Screening and Pap Smears; menopause.

UNIT 3: MEN’S SEXUAL HEALTH ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
Male Sexuality – An Overview; Physiology of Male Genitourinary System & Scrotal Pathology; Male Sexual Problems; Prostate Cancer – Screening, Investigation and Treatment; IMPLANON INSERTION WORKSHOP (OPTIONAL)

UNIT 4: GYNAECOLOGICAL ISSUES
Vulval Disorders & Common Menstrual Disorders; Management of Early Pregnancy; Female Infertility; Female Incontinence; Common Gynaecological Disorders.

UNIT 5: SEXUAL HEALTH COUNSELLING
Principles of Counselling & Taking a Sexual History; Sexuality and Diversity; Sexual Assault; Management of Specific Sexual Problems; Issues of Disability; Pregnancy Choices.

UNIT 6: LEGAL ISSUES IN SEXUAL HEALTH  
Case Studies & Scenarios on legal and ethical issues;

MODULE 2: ASSESSMENT

Written & Role Play Exam on all topics covered in course.

MODULE 3: CLINICAL ATTACHMENT
Clinical placements are arranged following completion of Modules 1 & 2, in the participant’s own time. Attendance at one week of clinical sessions is required,to cover a full range of clinical scenarios and achieve competencies.
