SHFPACT is offering the Well Women's Screening Course for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives (Distance Learning Module + Face to Face Workshop + Clinical Attachment) to provide nurses and midwives working in General Practice and other health care settings with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to undertake effective well women's screening.

Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT is the leader in integrated sexual and reproductive health workforce development, including post-graduate sexual and reproductive health education to nurses and doctors in the ACT. High quality continuing professional development for the nursing and allied health workforce is central to SHFPACT’s strategic directions to ensure continuing access by the ACT community to high quality sexual and reproductive health services.

This specifically focused Nurse Pap Test Provider Course has been developed for the following reasons:

  • To offer an accredited training program for nurses working in the ACT to become Pap test providers.
  • To provide nurses working in General Practice settings with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to undertake effective well women’s screening
  • To provide nurses working as Pap Test Providers with the necessary knowledge of related sexual and reproductive health issues, which enable them to provide holistic well women’s health screening and preventative checks within their scope of practice.
  • To recognise the diversity of different professional and educational needs, and increase professional development opportunities for nurses.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Course aim and learning outcomes:

The aim of this course is to equip registered nurses with the knowledge, skills and appropriate values/attitudes needed to achieve competency as a Nurse Pap Test Provider consistent with the National Standards for Nurse Pap Test Providers (1997).

By the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the relevance of the role of the Nurse Pap Test Provider to health promotion.
  • Apply knowledge of female sexual and reproductive anatomy and physiology relevant to cervical screening.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of the role, scope, breadth and limits of practice of the nurse as Pap Test Provider.
  • Discuss the relevant medico-legal issues relevant to nurses working in the area of cervical screening, and provide examples of how these medico-legal issues impact on the nurse’s practice
  • Demonstrate good communication skills and good sexual history taking technique.
  • Demonstrate clinical competencies according to the National Standards for Nurse Pap Test Providers (1997)
  • Demonstrate performance to a high standard of Pap test technique
  • Implement and apply relevant infection control principles to their clinical practice
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of related preventative health issues which a woman may present with when attending for a pap smear including STI information and screening for chlamydia; contraception information; breast awareness education; and continence advice and education.

Accreditation, CNE points and credit points:

This course has been accredited by the Royal College of Nursing, Australia, according to approved criteria .53 Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) points have been allocated to the course which may be used by nurses as part of their enrolment in RCNA Life Long Learning Program (3LP).
Recognition will be sought with universities involved in post graduate nurse education with the aim of seeking credit points towards relevant courses.

COURSE STRUCTURE:

This course is structured as a flexible delivery program, divided into two parts:

Part 1: Theory Component

The Theory Component comprises:
a) Reading and Workbook

Approximately 20 hours of course readings and workbook assessment activities covering:

  • The role of the Nurse Pap Test Provider
  • Human Sexuality
  • Female Sexual & reproductive anatomy and physiology. History taking & documentation for a well woman’s screen.
  • Introduction to sexually transmissible infections and screening for chlamydia
  • Introduction to contraception
  • Breast awareness
  • Continence education
  • HPV & cervical screening

b) Training Workshop (face-to-face):
8 hours of presentations over 2one day, including lectures; small group work; group discussion and skills development covering:

  • Cancer of the cervix, terminology & Pap Test results
  • HPV & the HPV Vaccines
  • Abnormal Pap test results, management, follow –up & recall
  • History taking & documentation for a well woman’s screen
  • Taking a pap Test: protocol, equipment, technique & procedure
  • Taking a Pap test- skills workshop:
  • Tutor client session

NB: Some areas are covered in both readings/workbook and face-to-face training.

Part 2: Clinical Placement

This is a supervised clinical placement of 20 hours. This is usually undertaken in a 3 day block involving 7 hours of clinic time per day. It is anticipated that nurses will complete their clinical placements within six months of commencement. The clinical placement is undertaken at SHFPACT and comprises:

  • Observation of experienced sexual and reproductive health nurses (or medical practitioners where relevant) performing Pap test consultations and Pap test procedures.
  • Performing a minimum of 15 Pap test consultations to a competent standard

The delivery of the theoretical component workshop and clinical placement component will usually occur at SHFPACT’s facilities at Level 1, 28 University Ave, Canberra City.
