
The FPAA Certificate Course for Doctors in Reproductive and Sexual Health
Nationally Accredited Training for Medical Practitioners
This nationally accredited course is designed for doctors who wish to expand their knowledge and clinical skills in delivering sexual and reproductive healthcare. The program includes a theory and assessment component, with the option to undertake a supervised clinical attachment to complete the full Family Planning Alliance of Australia Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors.

Theory Component
5th, 6th, and 7th September 2025
Delivered face-to-face over three consecutive days, with additional online modules to be completed pre- and post-in person days.
Course Overview
This This intensive and in-depth training program is designed for doctors aiming to deliver high-quality sexual and reproductive healthcare in primary care settings. The course includes:
- 37 hours of theoretical training, delivered through a blend of online modules and face-to-face sessions. 11.5 hours of online modules before and 8 hours of online modules after the three days face-to-face attendance.
- An optional 3 day supervised clinical placement.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate strategies to enable a non-judgemental approach to reproductive and sexual health practice.
- Assess and manage common and important reproductive and sexual problems in primary care andrology.
- Assess and manage common and important reproductive and sexual problems in primary care gynaecology.
- Compare the mechanisms of action, efficacy, side effects, contraindications, risks, advantages and disadvantages of all forms of available contraception.
- Integrate use of Australian Guidelines for STI testing and management into a variety of clinical case scenarios.

- Effective communication about reproduction, sexuality, and diversity
- Andrology in primary care
- Gynaecology in primary care
- Fertility and preconception care
- Options for unintended pregnancy
- Contraception
- Sexually transmissible infections (STIs)
- Care for specific populations and particular circumstances
Who Should Attend?
- Care for specific populations and particular circumstances
- General Practitioners (GPs) and GP Registrars
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G) Registrars
- Sexual Health Physician Registrars
- Junior doctors interested in Sexual and Reproductive Health
- Medical Practitioners who previously completed the FFPAA Certificate and wish to update their knowledge
Participant Eligibility
To enrol, participants must be:
- A registered medical practitioner with MBBS or equivalent
- Have at least one year of clinical experience post-internship, including women’s health experience in general practice or hospital gynaecology
For Clinical Attachment:
- Must have current AHPRA registration and medical indemnity insurance
- Must already have experience in bimanual and speculum examinations
- Note: The clinical attachment is not suitable for practitioners who have not yet acquired these skills
Course Delivery
This course is delivered via a hybrid model:
- Face-to-face sessions at SHFPACT in Canberra over three days (5–7 September 2025)
- Online modules accessed before and after the in-person course (available up to four weeks prior)
Theory Component
- Three days of in-person sessions featuring presentations, demonstrations, simulations, and case-based learning
- 11.5 hours of online learning through online modules before in-person sessions
- 8 hours of online learning post- in-person online modules
- Optional Contraceptive Implant Training Workshop at the end of Day 1
Assessment
- Written Exam: Open-book format, includes multiple-choice and short-answer questions
- Role-Play Exam: Simulated clinical consultation via video link or in person

Supervised Clinical Attachment (Optional)
To complete the full FPAA Certificate, participants must complete:
- Six clinical sessions over three consecutive days (available Wednesday–Friday)
- Begin with observation, then progress to supervised consultations
- Use a portfolio to demonstrate required competencies
- Role-plays and case studies may be included
Additional Notes:
- Must be completed within two years of finishing the theory and assessment component
- May be arranged in other states, subject to separate fee and availability
- Dates are individually scheduled after course completion
