Preparing for Periods NDIS

A four-week course for girls and young women living with an intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder on preparing for periods and managing puberty using the Preparing for Periods program.

Preparing for Periods is a program tailored specifically for girls living with intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder, to help them understand their bodies and growing up. This program teaches practical skills using visual and conceptual tools to help prepare for and manage the physical, social and emotional changes that occur during puberty.

This program focuses on:

  • How bodies grow and change
  • Public and private body parts, places and behaviours
  • How to manage periods
  • Healthy and hygienic habits
  • Understanding the concept of consent
  • Private help
  • Protective behaviours

Parents and Carers will be introduced to the course content in a two-hour session in the week prior to the course, to facilitate a better understanding of some of the complexities that the girls may encounter. A four-week course will follow for the girls who will be joined by their parent and/or carer who can help with their individual learning needs.

Both course dates also include two parent-only sessions.


  • 2 x 2 hour sessions for parents only.
  • 4 x 2 hour sessions for child plus parent/carer.
  • NDIS Categories Applicable: Improved Daily Living Skills.


  • NDIS Capped maximum cost: $1356.08
  • NON-NDIS $1490 (GST included)
    Limited scholarships are available.

Please note that changes may be made to course dates and mode of delivery at late notice if COVID-19 restrictions escalate. While SHFPACT will endeavour to avoid any unnecessary changes, this may be unavoidable. Every effort will be made to reschedule the course, and any affected placements or assessment, to ensure that course participants are able to complete the course in a reasonable timeframe.
